WOZNIAK ANNOUNCES FUNDS FOR ACID MINE
DRAINAGE PROJECT HARRISBURG, April 9, 2007 – State Sen. John N. Wozniak (D-Johnstown) announced today that the Pennsylvania State University will receive a $186,392 state grant to research treatments for acid mine drainage (AMD). “It is important that our communities are safe from the health hazards of improper mine drainage,” Wozniak said. “These generous funds will assist Penn State in finding innovative ways to remove this danger to our citizens and enhancing the environmental quality of the area.” The funds will be used to develop a passive pretreatment technology for high flow acid mine drainage (AMD) discharge at the Hughes Borehole in Portage Township, Cambria County. This research will study a treatment technology, known as “aeration terrace”, that mimics the physical features of natural iron mounds. This treatment is believed to be highly effective as a passive pretreatment method for high flow discharges. The funds were approved under the Growing Greener Grant Program for Innovative Mine Drainage In-Situ or Ex-Situ Treatment of Abatement, or Enhanced Metals Recovery Projects. |
