WOZNIAK: BUDGET OFFERS HOPE AND CHALLENGES IN A DIFFICULT YEAR

HARRISBURG, February 6, 2007 –
Speaking out on the Governor’s proposed budget, State Sen. John Wozniak (D-Johnstown) provided the following statement:

“This new budget offers hope while presenting challenges in a difficult year, I am anxious to work with the Administration and my colleagues in the House and Senate to see how this proposal evolves.”

“It is important that we address the critical issues facing the Commonwealth with innovative ways that are both cost effective and avoid tax increases.”

“I applaud the governor for his unwavering dedication to academics, seniors and his determination to solve the transportation crisis in Pennsylvania.”

“The Governor has a bold initiative for continuing the crusade for quality education in Pennsylvania with his proposed increases Pennsylvania’s investment in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education by $527.8 million,” Wozniak said. “This plan would make it possible for more than 11,000 Pennsylvania children to attend quality pre-K programs and 65 percent of all eligible students would be able to attend full-day kindergarten.”

Wozniak said the new budget also aims at alleviating the growing demand for long-term care.

“An investment of $17.2 million in state funds would make significant new investments in Pennsylvania’s long-term living system.”

“The budget also makes it possible for older Pennsylvanians to continue to receive valuable prescription drug assistance through the PACE Plus Medicare program, with a state investment of $276.4 million.”

“In an effort to address the state’s transportation crisis, the Governor has proposed an oil company gross profits tax on oil companies that do business in Pennsylvania, this plan would generate $760 million a year to fix roads, bridges and our mass transit systems.”

“This is an ambitious budget that will require time and debate, but in the end, the best possible solution for the citizens of Pennsylvania will rule the day.”
