Wozniak Property Tax Bill Exempts Elderly Homeowners

HARRISBURG, June 21, 2012 – State Sen. John N. Wozniak has introduced legislation that would exempt Pennsylvanians 90 years of age or older from paying school property taxes as long as they have lived in their homes for 20 years.

“If you are 90 and have been paying property taxes on your home for 20 years, you have paid enough,” Wozniak said. “While a permanent solution to rising school property taxes remains elusive, we can at least help those who have been hit the hardest.”

Senate Bill 1537 would ease the burden on elderly homeowners who face rising local taxes and health care costs, Wozniak said.

Wozniak has also introduced bills to lower school costs by consolidating school districts (SB793) and consolidating school administration by county (SB835). Both bills remain in the Senate Education Committee.

“There are powerful interests at work protecting school fiefdoms across the state and its more than many citizens can afford,” Wozniak said. “However incrementally we get there, that has to end.”
